While many believe that surfing originated in Hawaii, the writings of navigators deny it. The first traces of surfing, known thanks to the writings of Banks in the 18th century, took place between Taapuna and Sapinus. This wave has since seen some of the biggest names in Polynesian surfing, including Vetea David, the first French world champion in 1984.
